What is Viagra and How does it work?

Viagra, which is commonly known as Sildenafil, is the most recommended drug to treat erectile dysfunction, that has become a common and a disturbing experience for most men.

Erectile Dysfunction, also known as Impotence, is a male-only disorder whereby the person finds it difficult to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient enough for a sexual intercourse. There are many physical and psychological reasons associated with it. Physical causes include hormonal problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and the like; whereas psychological causes include stress, depression, anxiety, lack of interest and so on.

Generic Viagra or Sildenafil is a form of PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitor which suppresses the production of PDE5, mostly found in men with erectile dysfunction. As a result, the breakdown of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) stops and more cGMP is available in the blood vessels of the corpus cavernosum of the penis. This results in relaxation of the blood vessels causing the blood to flow freely to the penile nerve. This eventually results in an erection.
