NUVIGIL: The key to Vigilance

Are your colleagues from work bugging you by calling you a “sleepy-head”? Is your regular dose of coffee not working at all to keep you awake during the working hours? Are you finding it difficult to concentrate on your work?

Well, sleepiness is common in every individual. Due to our hectic schedule, we hardly get enough sleep which is sufficient for carrying out our regular chores. However, one should try to understand the difference between occasional sleepiness and frequent sleepiness. Occasional fatigue fades as soon as you take an ample amount of rest and exercise a bit. However, frequent sleepiness can have adverse effect on your physical as well as on your mental health. This is where smart drugs come into play.
Smart drugs are basically cognitive enhancers which help in promoting wakefulness and alertness in patients suffering from sleep disorders. Nuvigil is one such brain enhancer used to treat extreme sleepiness caused by sleep apnea (interruption in breathing during sleep), narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) and shift work disorder.

Nuvigil: How does it work?

Nuvigil is the brand name of the pill that comes under the generic name Armodafinil. The Nuvigil pill is a central nervous system stimulant which works by directly targeting the sleep response system of the brain. There is a neurotransmitter called dopamine that affects your emotions and movements. Nuvigil tends to increase the amount of dopamine in the brain by reducing its infusion into the nerves. And that’s how it makes your brain more alert and wakeful.
Nuvigil is a controlled drug and hence chances of addiction are comparatively less. It is a safe agent. However, it is to be noted that Nuvigil helps in promoting wakefulness and cannot guarantee the treatment of the underlying condition.

How should you take Nuvigil?

·       The normal dosage for people with narcolepsy and sleep apnea is 150mg-250mg to be taken one per day in the morning
·       The normal dosage for people with shift work disorder is 150 mg to be taken one per day  and approximately 1 hour prior to their shift work
