Cialis vs Viagra : A Tough Clash in the Impotence Market

Erectile dysfunction is not an untreatable disorder. With the advancement in Science and Technology, various treatments are available in the market today ranging from surgeries to ointments to the use of external devices. But what is most commonly prescribed by a doctor, depending on the severity of the case, is an oral pill. It comes with minimal side effects but has effective results.

But the question arises: Which ED pill one should choose from the plethora of oral medications for ED?

Well, the most renowned ED medications include Viagra and Cialis– which have actually produced excellent results in most cases. So before we go further, let’s dig deeper into these two PDE5 inhibitors in the following sections.

Cialis:

Cialis, also known as Tadalafil is used to treat impotence in men. It is a newer entry in the impotence market which got approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 21, 2003.

Cialis basically works by increasing the blood flow to the penile nerve causing it to dilate. As the person gets sexually stimulated, nitric oxide is released into the penile nerve and the production of cGMP increases. These enzymes regulates the flow of blood to and from the penis.

Cialis, in addition to the active element called tadalafil, contains the following inactive elements namely Hypromellose, Croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, Hydroxipropyl cellulose, Iron oxide, Titanium oxide, Lactose monohydrate, Microcrystalline cellulose, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Talc and Triacetin.

Cialis requires a small dose, ideally 10 to 20 mg, which can last up to 36 hours (much longer than that of Viagra’s). It should be taken 30 minutes prior to any sexual activity and can be taken with or without food. The dose can be increased or decreased as per individual tolerability and efficacy.

Viagra:

Viagra, which comes under the generic version of Sildenafil, is an older PDE5 inhibitor as compared to Cialis. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 27, 1998.

Being a PDE5 inhibitor like Cialis, Viagra also works by increasing the blood flow to the penis. As a result, nitric oxide is released and cGMP is produced relaxing the muscles around the blood vessels. The muscles expand and contract easily and the blood flows easily to the penile nerve.

Viagra contains an active element called Sildenafil citrate and the following inactive elements namely Microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, Croscarmellose sodium, Magnesium stearate, Titanium dioxide, Lactose, Triacetin, FD & C Blue #2 aluminum lake.

Viagra requires a higher dose of 100 mg and above and lasts for only a short span as compared to Cialis that is, 4 to 5 hours. Unlike Cialis, it needs to be taken 60 minutes before any sexual intercourse. It should normally be taken without food, because after a fat meal, Viagra doesn’t work as effectively.
